Marina Beach Sundal - Chennai Special

Hi Supermoms,

I am continuing my Street Food journey and today I am sharing a very popular Street food of Chennai.
If you happen to visit the Gorgeous Marina Beach, you cannot miss innumerable vendors selling this snack on the move. They carry a steel vessel with a handle and paper cones. Your visit to the beach is incomplete without indulging in this Thenga Maanga Pattani Sundal. The name  of this tangy healthy snack given by the street vendors of the  beach.

It is the season for raw mangoes. I picked up a kilo and in my long list of 'to do' recipes, the beach sundal came to my mind first.

The sundal has a romantic connection  too.  The lovers who come to the beach enjoy this snack together!!!!
There are plenty of tamil movies which features lovers having this sundal.....though this snack is enjoyed by all.

The recipe is absolutely simple with minimal ingredients. It takes hardly 10 minutes to prepare the Marina Beach Sundal

Like all other street food, the assembling of the dish varies from one vendor to another. I am recreating the taste of Sundal that I have had during one of my beach visits with my family.

Ingredients:( i am not given the measures as it depends on the quantity you want to make)

1. Yellow peas
2.Green Chillies-finely chopped
3.Roughly Chopped Raw Mango ( you can grate the mango if you like)
4.Thin sliced Coconut( you can grate this too)
5. Oil for tempering
6. Curry leaves
7. Mustard seeds
8. Salt to taste.
9. Turmeric
10. Grated ginger( optional)

METHOD

1. Soak the yellow peas overnight or for atleast 5 hours. Boil in a pressure cooker with water just covering the peas. Add turmeric and cook upto 3 whistles. Drain the excess water. When you gently press the peas, it has to mash. This is the right softness for the sundal.

2. Roughly chop your mango and coconut. Finely chop your green chillies.Alternatively, you can add the coconut, mango and green chillies in a mixer and coarsely grind them. But I like the crunchy bites of the coconut and mango. So, I have roughly chopped them.

3. In a pan, heat oil. Add the mustard seeds. When they crackle ,add the curryleaves, peas, salt and mix well.

4. Add the raw mango and coconut. mix well and switch off.

Your Marina Beach Sundal is ready!!!!

This is a healthy snack and you can add the spice according to your taste. Of course you can add Shredded carrots too!

You are sure to bring more smiles!!!

Happy Cooking!!!

With love,
